3 Longhorns Selected in the First Round of the Latest Mel Kiper Mock Draft

The Texas Longhorns are expected to be among the teams with the greatest representation in the 2018 NFL Draft for the first time in a long time.

In fact, the Longhorns may have multiple players selected in the first round for the first time since 2007—when Michael Griffin and Aaron Ross were selected by the Titans and the Giants, respectively—after a spectacular performance at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

And in his most recent mock draft, ESPN NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. forecasts three Horns, including one who he believes will be a future Hall of Famer, to go in the first round alone next month.

No. 19 Byron Murphy – Los Angeles Rams

Following Aaron Donald’s retirement announcement, the Los Angeles Rams suddenly face a pressing need for a defensive tackle, a position that wasn’t previously a priority before free agency. With Donald’s departure, the Rams must now concentrate on filling the significant void left by the future Hall of Famer.

Byron Murphy II, hailing from Texas, emerges as a compelling option in this scenario. Considering these factors, Murphy seems to be a natural fit for the Rams. However, it’s important to note that the Rams haven’t selected in the first round since 2016, leaving open the possibility for them to trade down in the draft.

No. 26 Xavier Worthy – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Kiper suggests that the Buccaneers are poised to sustain their success from 2023, with key players such as quarterback Baker Mayfield, wide receiver Mike Evans, and linebacker Lavonte David returning to the team. Despite facing salary cap challenges, GM Jason Licht has adeptly managed the situation, positioning the team for strong competition in the NFC South, particularly against an improved Atlanta squad.

When considering draft options, Kiper sees an opportunity for the Buccaneers to enhance their offense by selecting a dynamic third wide receiver capable of stretching the field. Xavier Worthy from the Texas Longhorns emerges as a standout choice for this role. Despite his smaller stature at 5-foot-11 and 165 pounds, Worthy brings exceptional speed and playmaking ability, posing a significant threat to opposing defenses.

No. 32 Adonai Mitchell – Kansas City Chiefs

Kiper emphasizes the ongoing need for the Kansas City Chiefs to strengthen their receiving corps, even with the addition of Marquise Brown in free agency. Pointing to Adonai Mitchell as a promising prospect from Texas, Kiper suggests that he could serve as an excellent complement to Brown and Rashee Rice. Mitchell’s outstanding performance at the combine, including a 4.34-second 40-yard dash and an impressive 11-foot-4 broad jump, demonstrates his exceptional athleticism.

Additionally, his reliable hands, demonstrated by his 11 touchdown receptions last season, make him a valuable asset for the Chiefs’ offense. With his ability to elude defenders after the catch, Mitchell emerges as a dynamic playmaker for the team.
