Perhaps the largest addition to the coaching staff of the Atlanta Falcons under new head coach Raheem Morris was just signed. NFL Network reports that Zac Robinson, the pass game coordinator and coach of the Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks, has been appointed by Atlanta as their new offensive coordinator.
Following Arthur Smith’s dismissal on January 7, the Falcons conducted a thorough search before agreeing to terms with Morris, the former defensive coordinator for the Rams, to become their next head coach on January 25. Robinson and Morris are good friends, and during the interview cycle, the former had the latter on his list of assistant coaches, according to Sports Illustrated.
Many teams expressed interest in hiring Robinson as their offensive coordinator before he accepted the Atlanta position, including the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Chicago Bears, Las Vegas Raiders, and New Orleans Saints.
“Working with Coach Robinson has been a lot of fun, getting to know him personally but then also just all the extra work we get after practice,” Wentz said. “He’s been awesome. He’s been nothing but help and all my questions, I’ve just probably felt like I’m driving him nuts. “But it’s been fun to get to work with him – he’s an awesome guy and he definitely understands this game, understands this scheme, and has been an awesome resource for me.” Prior to his time with the Rams, Robinson worked at Pro Football Focus as a senior analyst, evaluating both pro and collegiate quarterbacks. Robinson was a three-year starter at quarterback for Oklahoma State University, where he attended from 2005-2009, and was selected by the New England Patriots in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL Draft.
The trio of playmakers still on rookie contracts—tight end Kyle Pitts, receiver Drake London, and running back Bijan Robinson—are among the key players from the unit that the Falcons are returning.
Robinson has a solid base to work from because all five of Atlanta’s offensive line starters have contracts that expire at the end of the following campaign. The Falcons now have Desmond Ridder, Taylor Heinicke, and Logan Woodside under contract at quarterback, but owner Arthur Blank called their play this past season “deficient.” Robinson’s biggest task will be sorting out quarterback.
