ATLANTA FALCONS
JUST IN: Falcons to Interview Sean Desai, Former Eagle, for Defensive Coordinator Position
The Atlanta Falcons are interviewing yet another intriguing applicant for the position of defensive coordinator.
Raheem Morris is the new head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, and it appears that they are turning their focus to selecting a new defensive coordinator.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Sean Desai, a former defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, is the most recent applicant to interview with the Falcons for the same position.
After Jonathan Gannon left the Eagles to take the head coaching position with the Arizona Cardinals over the offseason, Desai, forty, was only with the team for one season. To say that Desai had a difficult season would be an understatement.
The Eagles’ defense, which had already lost several key players in the previous summer, has significantly declined this year. Nevertheless, given Philadelphia’s 10-1 start, it was simple to overlook the defense’s inadequacies.
But after the Eagles suffered blowout losses to the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers in back-to-back games, things started to go south. Following that, the Eagles elevated assistant Matt Patricia to the position of de facto defensive coordinator and relieved Desai of his play-calling responsibilities. That choice aged poorly, as expected, as Philadelphia kept losing and was eventually destroyed in the Wild Card Round.
Both Desai and Patricia were fired after the season, but only the former has drawn interest from employers. Desai will interview with the Falcons for the defensive coordinator position, and he will also speak with the Buffalo Bills regarding their opening. Prior to moving to Philadelphia, Desai was the defensive coordinator and associate head coach of the Chicago Bears in 2021 and the Seattle Seahawks in 2022. Overall, the Eagles’ defense finished 30th in points allowed and 26th in yards allowed, a sharp decline from the previous season in both categories.
