Eels Make Major Moves Under Jason Ryles: Inside the $3M Overhaul for a Revival
The Parramatta Eels are undergoing a significant transformation under new head coach Jason Ryles as he aims to break the club’s lengthy NRL premiership drought. Ryles, who stepped into the role with a clear vision, has already made bold decisions in player retention and recruitment. In his quest for a top-tier roster, he’s released several veteran players, including Reagan Campbell-Gillard and team captain Clint Gutherson. Meanwhile, Maika Sivo is set for a move to the Super League, marking the end of a significant era for the club. These changes, though tough, are part of Ryles’ broader plan to restructure the team and regain competitiveness.
Former NRL star Corey Parker has praised Ryles’ approach, highlighting that while some moves may not sit well with everyone, they reflect a commitment to long-term success. Parker noted that Ryles has been quick to address gaps in the roster that were previously overlooked, especially at the hooker position. The departure of Reed Mahoney left a noticeable void, with no equivalent replacement in sight. Now, Jayden Brailey from the Knights is reportedly on the Eels’ radar, a move that could inject skill and consistency into the team’s lineup, especially alongside key players like Mitchell Moses, Dylan Brown, and Zac Lomax.
Ryles is also keen on boosting the Eels’ strength in the outside backs. With Sivo leaving, the team is eyeing Josh Addo-Carr, who previously worked with Ryles at the Storm. Bringing Addo-Carr on board could add a dynamic edge, and his relationship with Ryles might help secure the deal. The addition of Lomax, who signed a four-year contract before Ryles joined, is also seen as a strategic win, with the option to play him as a winger or center depending on team needs.
While these changes may take time to yield results, Ryles is building a roster that can adapt and compete with NRL’s best. With potentially up to $3 million freed up for new signings over the coming seasons, the Eels are well-positioned to recruit more talent and address lingering weaknesses. Fans are hopeful this overhaul will push the Eels back into the finals and, eventually, break their 39-year title drought.
