LSU TIGER
Angel Reese of LSU explains why she chose to drop “Bayou Barbie” before joining the WNBA.
Angel Reese, the former star of LSU women’s basketball, earned the nickname “Bayou Barbie” in her first season at Baton Rouge. She further popularized the term by helping the Tigers win the 2023 national championship.
Reese, who was selected by the Chicago Sky with the seventh overall pick in the WNBA draft, says she’s prepared to adopt a new moniker when she moves to the north.
In a social media post, Reese stated that she welcomes recommendations for her new nickname in Chicago.
Reese wrote on X, “I need a new name now that I’m in Chicago lol something cute that is catchy like Bayou Barbie.”
Now that she’s in the WNBA, it also makes financial sense for Reese to think of a catchy moniker. She attempted to obtain a trademark for “Bayou Barbie” while attending LSU, but the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejected her application in October. The 6-foot-3 forward had the option to challenge the decision, but he decided not to.
Reese’s legal representative informed On3 that they chose not to appeal the decision because to Mattel’s trademark ownership of the Barbie name.
Supporters were eager to propose Chief Reese, Chi-Reese, Breezy Blue, and Chi-Town Angel as potential nicknames for Reese.
