Jane Schoenbrun’s latest psychological horror, acclaimed as one of this year’s standout films, delves into the unsettling world of teenage fandom. Owen (played by Justice Smith) and Maddy (portrayed by Brigette Lundy-Paine) form a bond fueled by their shared passion for the YA series “The Pink Opaque.” Years later, as the burdens of adulthood weigh heavily on them, Maddy resurfaces in Owen’s life, offering an enticing escape into the show’s fictional universe. However, this journey comes with a chilling caveat—a steep price for a permanent retreat into the realm of television.
In another cinematic narrative, young Elizabeth (depicted by Cailey Fleming) possesses a unique ability to interact with imaginary friends, including those of other children who have outgrown them. Her neighbor Cal (played by Ryan Reynolds) shares this gift, and together they embark on a quest to reunite these abandoned Imaginary Friends (IFs) with their former companions. This live-action/animated hybrid boasts an impressive voice cast, including Steve Carell, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Maya Rudolph, Jon Stewart, George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, and, in his final role, the late Louis Gossett, Jr.
Meanwhile, Marisa Abela takes on the role of iconic singer Amy Winehouse in “Back to Black,” a biopic directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson. The film aims to explore the essence of Winehouse beyond the sensationalism of tabloid headlines, shedding light on her immense talent and tragic demise at the age of 27.
In “The Blue Angels,” a captivating documentary presented in IMAX format, viewers are treated to an intimate look at the U.S. Navy’s elite aviation demonstration team. Witnessing the skill and camaraderie of these top-tier pilots as they navigate F-18s at incredible speeds offers a thrilling and immersive cinematic experience.
The Time Warp Drive-In returns with a lineup of ’80s sci-fi classics under the theme “Weird Realms.” Featuring “Flash Gordon,” “The Dark Crystal,” and Ridley Scott’s “Legend,” this cinematic journey promises mind-bending visuals and unforgettable storytelling. From the iconic Queen soundtrack of “Flash Gordon” to the unparalleled puppetry of “The Dark Crystal” and Tim Curry’s mesmerizing portrayal of Darkness in “Legend,” these films continue to captivate audiences with their timeless appeal and imaginative worlds.
