Richmond makes “frustrating” decision on Dusty, considers specialist coaching amid tackling controversy.
Richmond faces further “frustration” as superstar Dustin Martin is ruled out for a third consecutive week due to a “crook back.”
Martin, who was subbed out during the Round 16 loss to Carlton with a back spasm, hasn’t played since. With uncertainty about his future, the 33-year-old is running out of time to play in the 2024 season.
“There’s a bit of frustration for us,” senior coach Adem Yze said on Thursday. “He has a crook back that spasms, and pushing him could aggravate it again. It’s easier to rule him out this week and aim for more training next week.”
Martin is aiming for a return against Collingwood and has found solace in playing golf, which helps him unwind from AFL’s demands. Yze supports Martin’s golf hobby, as it also helps him bond with younger players.
“No, I haven’t confiscated his clubs,” Yze said. “It’s been very good for him, connecting with younger players like Rhyan Mansell. Playing 18 holes with one of the best players is great for them.”
Richmond will also miss in-form midfielder Tim Taranto for the Port Adelaide clash due to a concussion from a tackle by GWS’s Toby Bedford. Despite Bedford’s “perfect” tackle, the MRO and Tribunal upheld a three-week suspension, which will be challenged at the Appeal Board.
Yze acknowledged the difficulty players face in tackling in the current climate, saying, “It is hard to know what’s going on during a tackle; a lot of times you might have your eyes closed.”
He noted that bigger players have an advantage in tackling, and smaller players, like Liam Baker tackling Patty Cripps, focus on stopping possession rather than other considerations.
“Tackling is hard when you’re taking someone to the ground; it’s difficult to let go. The main thing we’ve been coaching is to avoid dump tackles or driving motions,” Yze said.
To improve tackling techniques and reduce head injuries and suspensions, Yze and the Tigers are considering bringing in NRL and martial arts coaches.
