Kyle Flanagan has secured his future with the St. George Illawarra Dragons, signing a two-year extension that keeps him at the club until the end of 2027. The announcement comes as the club bolsters its squad with the impending arrival of Sharks utility Daniel Atkinson in 2026, promising a fierce battle for positions in the Dragons’ spine.

At 26 years old, Flanagan is set to enter his 100th NRL game next season, cementing his role as a pivotal figure in the Dragons’ plans. Since reuniting with his father, head coach Shane Flanagan, Kyle has demonstrated his value as a steady playmaker and leader on and off the field.

The Dragons’ 2024 campaign saw Flanagan establish himself as the preferred No. 6 alongside Ben Hunt, but the upcoming season will likely see him partner new recruit Lachlan Ilias, with Atkinson’s arrival adding more depth and flexibility to the lineup.

Head coach Shane Flanagan emphasized the importance of competition within the squad:

“With Daniel Atkinson joining the club from 2026, the competition for spots across the key spine positions will strengthen the whole squad. Kyle’s versatility and experience make him an important asset moving forward.”

Flanagan’s ability to cover multiple positions—including five-eighth, hooker, and goal-kicking—provides the Dragons with crucial depth and adaptability. His professionalism has also earned the respect of teammates and management alike, with CEO Ryan Webb lauding his contributions:

“Kyle has displayed tremendous professionalism and has been a great example for the younger players in our squad. On the field, his versatility adds value, and off the field, he has been a fantastic role model.”

Kyle Flanagan has previously played for the Sharks, Roosters, and Bulldogs before joining the Dragons in 2024. The extension signifies the Dragons’ confidence in his ability to deliver both stability and leadership as they work towards consistent finals appearances.

However, this challenge could elevate his game further, contributing to a bright future for the Dragons. As they prepare for the 2025 season, the Red V faithful will be eager to see how Flanagan continues to make his mark in red and white.
