Reasons Dustin Martin did not sign with the Gold Coast Suns following Richmond’s retirement

Gold Coast Suns coach Damien Hardwick has confirmed that the club made an attempt to convince Dustin Martin to come out of retirement and join them for another AFL stint. However, the Richmond legend ultimately decided to remain a one-club player, turning down the opportunity to reunite with his former coach at the Suns.
Following his departure from Richmond, speculation swirled about a potential move to Metricon Stadium, where Hardwick has been reshaping the Suns’ squad. Given Martin’s deep ties with Hardwick, who coached him to three premierships, many believed a transition to Gold Coast was on the cards. However, the Tigers champion ultimately chose to step away from playing rather than don a new jumper.
Hardwick shed light on their discussions, stating that the decision was entirely in Martin’s hands. “It was really up to Dustin whether he still had the ambition to play,” Hardwick told the Herald Sun. “He loves the game, but he also loves Richmond. I think he wanted to retire as a one-club player.”
Despite the Suns’ openness to bringing Martin on board, the 33-year-old remained firm in his choice. Hardwick admitted that having Martin in the team would have been a massive boost for the Suns, not just because of his on-field talent, but also due to the confidence he instills in those around him. “He’s one of those guys who just makes the players around him walk a bit taller,” Hardwick added.
With the door now closed on a return, Martin appears content with his post-football life. Hardwick mentioned catching up with his former star a few weeks ago and noted that he was enjoying his freedom. Whether Martin pursues coaching, business ventures, or simply continues traveling, his future remains uncertain, but for now, he is embracing life beyond the AFL.
While Gold Coast missed out on securing one of the game’s biggest names, Richmond fans can take solace in knowing that their club legend stayed true to the yellow and black, ensuring his AFL legacy remains firmly tied to Punt Road.
