Report: Former Yankees pitcher signs with the Red Sox; is a comeback imminent?
In the division, one former player for the New York Yankees will remain.
Despite being among the most unexpected teams in baseball this offseason, the Boston Red Sox have chosen to add additional depth to their roster rather than make any significant additions. Boston apparently added more on Saturday, as Lucas Luetge, a former pitcher for the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and Atlanta Braves, posted on social media.
Luetge stated, “Year 17 and returning to the Northeast.” “Excited to join the Red Sox organization!”
Throughout his career in baseball, Luetge has been a journeyman, but in 2021 and 2022, he had the most success as a member of the Yankees. He signed with the Yankees for the 2021 season, and in 72 1/3 innings pitched, he recorded a 2.74 ERA with a 78 to 15 strikeout to walk ratio.
The lefty had probably an even better season in 2022 to build on his success in 2021. In 50 appearances, he had a 2.67 ERA and in 57 1/3 innings pitched, he had a 60 to 17 strikeout to walk ratio.
Although Luetge’s exact position within the Boston organization is unknown, it wouldn’t be shocking to see him eventually promoted to the major leagues. He signed a minor league contract with Boston, but he might be given another chance if he shows promise.
Adding veteran depth with big-league potential at the minor league level is always beneficial. Luetge has played in the major leagues for seven years, and he has even more lower league experience. Although he played well for New York, he will now be representing the biggest opponent of the team.
