LeBron James playing elite basketball and Gregg Popovich coaching the San Antonio Spurs have been the two constants in the lives of a whole generation of basketball fans.
Many Spurs supporters, including me, have never known a time when Popovich wasn’t leading the team, and they can’t recall a time when James wasn’t the best player in the NBA.
The two have never played together, save for a small period of time in 2004 when Popovich served as an assistant coach during the Olympics. Despite this, they are incredibly respectful of one another.
James raved about Popovich following the Los Angeles Lakers’ victory over the Spurs, which was sparked by his 30 points. “One of the greatest coaches of all time, but more importantly one of the best people of all time that I’ve ever been around,” stated James.
“I love everything about Coach Pop and to be able to share the court with him and to be able to talk to him and have the friendship that we have, it’s very special to me.”
There is some truth to the speculations that James could desire to play for the Spurs, even while the remarks are undoubtedly the product of two decades of intense rivalry and witnessing each other flourish and establish themselves as household names in the basketball world.
James is over 40 years old, and his domination and longevity are unmatched in the history of the league, so it would be the perfect way to finish his life to spend it with one of his favorite people and a new star who is soon to overtake James as the league’s face.
James did not stop praising Popovich when Victor Wembanyama shared another historic stat line during the Lakers game.
“[Wembanyama] has an unbelievable coach who’s going to make sure he does things the right way, play the game the right way, and he’s going to continue to develop, but he’s already special and he’s going to continue to get better and better and better,” James said following the victory.
James shared his amazement at sharing the court with Wembanyama on social media as well.
Though it sounds a bit far-fetched to think that James will sign a free agent contract with a rebuilding team, it may be the farewell tour he has been hinting at all season.
When it comes to assisting the Spurs in acclimating Wembanyama to the NBA, James and Popovich are the best combination.
