SHEFFIELD WED
TRENDING NEWS: Sheffield Wednesday receives a positive boost as a key player returns to training ahead of their upcoming clash against Rotherham.
Sheffield Wednesday has received encouraging news regarding injuries leading up to their crucial match against Rotherham United this weekend. The team will make the short journey across South Yorkshire to take on Rotherham United, who currently sit at the bottom of the league table.
Rotherham United finds themselves trailing by 16 points, with Sheffield Wednesday maintaining a 13-point lead following a string of six consecutive defeats and only one victory since October.
In contrast, Sheffield Wednesday has shown promising form by winning three out of their last four matches, narrowing the gap to just three points from safety. Their recent 2-1 triumph over Bristol City highlights their improved performance.
Akin Famewo, aged 25, has been sidelined for Sheffield Wednesday’s last three matches due to a muscle injury. However, journalist Joe Crann has disclosed on X that Famewo is now ‘back in training.’ Whether he will be fit enough to feature in the upcoming clash against Rotherham United remains uncertain.
Under both Xisco Munoz and Danny Rohl’s management, Akin Famewo, previously associated more with the left side of defense than the center, has found himself in that role. However, with Marvin Johnson now firmly holding that position, and Kristian Pedersen, who arrived in January, still sidelined, Famewo’s eventual return will offer much-needed left-sided coverage for Rohl.
Famewo’s comeback comes at a critical juncture for Sheffield Wednesday, with 12 games left in the season and a three-point gap to bridge for survival in the Championship. His return will significantly bolster the Owls’ chances of staying in the league.
At present, Johnson shoulders a significant burden to remain injury-free, as Rohl lacks fit left-back options should Johnson be unavailable. While Johnson has primarily operated as a left wing-back in recent matches, Famewo’s potential return could provide Rohl with more tactical flexibility, particularly if deploying a back four.
Given the limited options in central defense beyond the trio of Di’Shon Bernard, who is suspended for the upcoming match, Michael Ihiekwe, and Liam Palmer, Famewo’s versatility will be invaluable for Sheffield Wednesday during the crucial run-in.
Overall, Famewo’s return to training and eventual comeback to action is a significant boost for Sheffield Wednesday and Rohl. As they prepare to face Rotherham United, Rohl will likely keep a close watch on other key matches involving relegation rivals, such as Stoke City vs. Middlesbrough, QPR vs. Leicester City, and Millwall vs. Watford.
