It’s unsurprising when the competitive nature of sports intensifies, creating pressure for both the athletes we support and those we oppose. Competition not only enhances the entertainment value but also sparks rivalries. However, there’s another aspect to consider: competition within the same team. Look no further than the Philadelphia Eagles for evidence of this dynamic.
While some players on the current roster are secure in their positions as starters, they still face pressure to perform due to the potential signing of talent in the same position, encouraging them to stay on their toes.
This pressure can be beneficial for some players, motivating them to excel. Yet, for others, it may lead to struggles (as seen with Carson Wentz). Nevertheless, the Eagles cannot afford to be concerned about individual responses. Neglecting to maintain a competitive depth chart risks weakening the team.
Take Marlon Tuipulotu, for instance, who finds himself in a contract year. It’s hard to believe that the 2021 Eagles draft class is already in its fourth year, with none of them having received extensions yet. Tuipulotu faces a unique challenge due to the abundance of talent at the defensive tackle position. While speculation suggests Fletcher Cox’s tenure might be ending, nothing is certain. Even if Cox stays, Tuipulotu is likely to find himself below Cox, Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, and Milton Williams on the depth chart, with Noah Elliss, Moro Ojomo, and Thomas Booker also vying for positions.
Tuipulotu is just one example of Eagles players who have not yet secured extensions but are already feeling the heat. Several others on the team fit this category as well.
