Los Angeles Rams
After being cut by the Jaguars, the former Rams starter is back on the market.
In 2023, Darious Williams ranked seventh among cover corners according to PFF; should the Rams re-sign him?
Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report has reported that CB Darious Williams will be released by the Jacksonville Jaguars prior to his free agency start next week. Williams had a $11.5 million 2024 cap charge, and Jacksonville is making room for edge rusher Josh Allen to receive the franchise tag.
Fans of the Rams will recall Williams from his four seasons in Los Angeles. When the Los Angeles Rams switched to the Brandon Staley defense in 2020, he took over as a full-time starter. The team’s winning corner in Super Bowl LVI was him. After the Super Bowl, Williams became a free agent and was signed by the Jaguars. His At the time, the transaction was said to be worth $39 million over three years.
The seasoned corner is still performing at the highest level. He played more than 1,000 snaps for the Jaguars in 2023, and with an 85.3 rating, he was tied with Derek Stingley for the fifth-highest cover corner ranking last season, per Pro Football Focus (PFF). The only people ranked higher than him were Jaylon Johnson, Sauce Gardner, Charvarius Ward, and DaRon Bland.
Is it time for a reunion with the Rams? With seasoned cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon scheduled to become a free agent in 2023 following a somewhat breakout year, Los Angeles needs assistance at cornerback. In the second season, Derion Kendrick and Cobie Durant did not improve, however it is reasonable to question how much their inability to consistently generate a pass rush put them at a disadvantage. Williams might provide the Rams defense a senior presence and schematic experience, but it’s unclear if LA can afford his price.
Williams’ size is one thing that hurts his game and the Rams’ current cornerback corps. Williams’s stated weight is just 5-9, 187 lbs. Kendrick and Durant are listed at 5-11, 180 pounds, and 6-0, 190 pounds, in that order. Tre Tomlinson, who was selected by Los Angeles in the sixth round of the previous draft, is very small at just 5-8 and 180 pounds.
If the Rams are going to add a veteran in free agency, it would make sense for them to be searching for a corner with greater stature. However, if none of Kendrick, Durant, or Tomlinson work out in the long run, they may try to select a bigger corner early in the draft.
Now that Darious Williams is a free agent, would the Rams reunite with the seasoned cornerback?
