The Carolina Hurricanes have signed goaltender Spencer Martin to a one-year contract extension.
After being claimed off waivers on January 19, Spencer Martin joined the Carolina Hurricanes. He had started the season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he posted a record of 3-8-1, with a 3.65 goals-against average (GAA) and .887 save percentage (SV%) in 13 games.

However, since his arrival in Raleigh, Martin’s performance has notably improved, coinciding with the Hurricanes’ pursuit of a division title. In five starts with the team, the 28-year-old goaltender has achieved a record of 4-0-1, boasting a 1.97 GAA and .922 SV%.
General manager Don Waddell has expressed satisfaction with Martin’s contributions, stating, “Spencer has been an excellent addition to our team. He stepped right in and played well for us, and we’re excited to sign him for next season.”
This contract extension ensures that the Hurricanes will have three goaltenders signed through the next season, alongside Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov, who both have multiple years remaining on their contracts. Antti Raanta, currently playing with the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League, is poised to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
Martin is currently in the final year of a two-year contract, with an average annual value (AAV) of $762,500, that he signed with the Vancouver Canucks in April 2022.
Having made stops with the Colorado Avalanche and Canucks prior to this season, Martin has experienced various stints in the professional ranks, including time with the San Antonio Rampage, Syracuse Crunch, and Abbotsford Canucks in the American Hockey League.
In his 56 NHL appearances, Martin holds a record of 21-25-7, with a 3.47 GAA and .889 SV%.
The Hurricanes, with a current record of 40-20-6, are preparing to face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. They currently sit second in the Metropolitan Division, trailing the first-place New York Rangers by four points.
