The former manager of Sunderland and Newcastle United hopes PIF isn’t taking this significant shift into account.
Newcastle United’s exploits in the Champions League the previous season were not repeated in 2023–24.
Sam Allardyce thinks Eddie Howe at Newcastle United was never equipped to handle a Champions League campaign.
Following the Magpies’ top-four finish last summer, four first-team players joined. But for the first time since the takeover financed by Saudi Arabia, Newcastle’s hiring practices have been questioned.
Sandro Tonali, a marquee arrival, made just 12 games before receiving a 10-month ban for breaking betting rules, despite making an excellent impression on debut. The other newcomer who was anticipated to establish himself in the starting lineup, Harvey Barnes, has been injured for the majority of the season.
Though Tino Livramento has emerged as the standout player and appears to be a future full-back for England, the Lewis Hall acquisition presents more problems than it does answers. Despite a severe injury crisis, the young player, who signed a loan with Newcastle and had an obligation to buy, has made very few appearances under Howe.
As they deal with a string of injuries on the treatment table, the Magpies’ roster has appeared thin throughout the season. As a result, Newcastle dropped to 10th place in the Premier League and has little to no chance of pulling off another incredible Champions League performance.
Although they are still vying for a European slot, their poor performance this season has served as a wake-up call for the long-term endeavor. Former Newcastle and Sunderland manager Allardyce pleaded with the club’s ownership to maintain Howe in an interview with the Tippy Tappy Football podcast.
He said, “Eddie Howe never had the team to handle the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Champions League.” “They are where they are now because the squad was insufficiently large.”
But as usual, there are rumors because he hasn’t had a particularly successful season. I hope no one is considering changing him just yet or that the owners aren’t considering it.
