Victor Wembanyama and Nikola Jokic squared off in a classic center duel Friday night as the French center faced off against the current Finals MVP. Jokic was repeatedly blocked by Wembanyama, which caused the Serbian center to make baseless threats against the front-runner for Rookie of the Year.

“I threatened to do something if you stopped one more shot. However, he blocked approximately four more after that, so I took no action.”

Wembanyama put up 29 points, 15 rebounds, eight assists, and nine blocks in the 105-110 loss to Jokic’s Nuggets. Jokic had an MVP-caliber game himself, putting up 42 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists in the win.

The two teams are on opposite ends of the West, with the Nuggets tied for the No. 1 seed and the Spurs rooted to the No. 15 seed. This game was far more competitive than anyone expected it to be, primarily because of Wembanyama’s game-changing ability to impact results. The thought that this is the worst he’ll ever be is terrifying.

Wembanyama is averaging 1.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.3 steals, and 3.5 blocks as a rookie, currently the runaway favorite to win Rookie of the Year despite Chet Holmgren’s incredible season as well.

When season awards are given out, Victor Wembanyama is unlikely to be named Defensive Player of the Year, but that doesn’t mean it has anything to do with his skill level. Wemby is genuinely enjoying a DPOY-caliber season; he now leads the league in stocks (steals + blocks), sitting at 321 ahead of the last nine DPOY winners’ stocks.

Wembanyama is the Draymond Green nominee for DPOY.

Wemby is such an incredible defensive player that he ought to win defensive player of the year. He has a problem because of the way he affects the game defensively, both on and off the ball. It’s considered a blocked shot when you drive to the hole and someone attempts a layup but turns away.

Given the Spurs’ 18-58 record, Wemby’s chances of winning the award are very slim. But as Kyrie Irving also noted, Wemby is certain to be a consistent candidate for the honor going forward.

He appears to have surpassed all of the players who have previously won the award in terms of defensive player of the year statistics. He has every opportunity to win Defensive Player of the Year, and I have no idea who they will select.”

Rudy Gobert will probably win this season’s DPOY award because he leads the NBA’s top defense and keeps demonstrating his incomparable defensive impact. Wemby, a new defensive wonder from France, is currently playing in the NBA, therefore it’s certain that this season will change the course of history as Wemby is destined to be among the best players of all time.
