Alexander Zverev withdraws from Shanghai Masters days after strongly criticizing ATP
Illness forced Alexander Zverev to withdraw from the Shanghai Open, days after he took a strong stance against tennis authorities over the busy schedule.
World No. 2 Alexander Zverev has openly criticized the ATP’s demanding schedule, which he feels leaves little room for player recovery. After reaching the US Open quarter-finals earlier this month, Zverev announced his withdrawal from the China Open due to a diagnosis of pneumonia.
“I have to take care of my health first so that I can compete again as soon as possible,” Zverev stated, explaining the physical challenges he’s faced in recent months. He was set to be the second seed at the China Open but will be replaced in the draw by Miomir Kecmanovic.
This announcement follows Zverev’s participation in the 2024 Laver Cup, where he contributed to Team Europe’s victory with a win over Frances Tiafoe, though he struggled physically against Taylor Fritz, who also defeated him at the US Open. Zverev’s situation highlights the toll that the busy ATP calendar can take on players’ health and performance.
He expressed his belief that action should be taken about the calendar, which features events throughout the year. Since I am a member of the player council, I believe the ATP is making progress in that direction. Although it’s not a simple solution, one that must be found,” he remarked.
During a recent press conference, Alexander Zverev expressed strong concerns about the ATP’s priorities, stating, “the ATP doesn’t care” about players’ opinions, emphasizing that it’s “a money business.” He noted the restrictions on players, mentioning that they face fines if they attempt to boycott tournaments.
World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz also voiced his frustrations regarding the packed tennis calendar after helping secure Team Europe’s victory at the Laver Cup. He remarked, “Probably they are going to kill us in some way,” referring to the toll injuries are taking on many top players, which may lead to them missing significant tournaments.
Alcaraz, who is set to compete at the Shanghai Masters 1000 starting Wednesday, admitted, “Sometimes, you don’t want to go to a tournament.” He stressed the importance of enjoying the game, stating, “I play my best tennis when I smile and enjoy it on court,” highlighting the need for motivation amidst the grueling schedule.
