Arizona men’s basketball head coach Tommy Lloyd has confirmed the addition of Trey Townsend, the 2024 Horizon League Player of the Year, as a transfer for the 2024-25 season, marking his final year of college eligibility. Townsend, who previously starred at the University of Oakland, impressed Lloyd with his consistent improvement throughout his four-year college career. Lloyd praised Townsend’s skills and ability to perform against top competition, expressing gratitude for welcoming him and his family into the Arizona basketball community.

Originating from Oxford, Michigan, near Detroit, Townsend was a staple in Oakland’s starting lineup, playing 129 games over four years. He maintained solid averages of 14.1 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 50% from the field and 73.9% from the free-throw line. Notably, he clinched the Lou Henson Award as the premier player in mid-major college basketball and received recognition for his academic achievements.

Townsend’s development on the court was evident, particularly in his three-point shooting percentage, which rose from 24% in his initial seasons to 38% in his final two years. His scoring also saw a significant increase from 8.4 points per game as a freshman to 17.3 points per game in his senior year.

In his standout 2023-24 season, Townsend’s performance was highlighted by being named MVP of the Horizon League Tournament, where he propelled the Grizzlies to the NCAA Tournament with a memorable championship game performance. Notably, he led Oakland to upset victories over Kentucky and a thrilling overtime battle against NC State.

Townsend’s impact extends beyond the court, as he etched his name in the Oakland record books and earned accolades in high school basketball and high jump. His family ties to Oakland, with both parents having played basketball for the university, further solidify his connection to the program. With his impressive skill set and background, Townsend’s addition is a significant boost for Arizona basketball.
