Arizona football Tight ends expected to play big role in offense under coach Brent Brennan

Tanner McLachlan emerged unexpectedly, shattering numerous school records for a tight end, a position that hadn’t been prominently featured in Arizona’s offense since the days of Rob Gronkowski. Despite the unlikely chance of the current tight end group replicating McLachlan’s remarkable performance in the past two seasons, they are poised to play a significant role in Brent Brennan’s offensive scheme.

During spring practices, the offense frequently lined up with multiple tight ends on the field, a strategy imported from San Jose State by Brennan and position coach Matt Adkins. This was evident in Saturday’s scrimmage at Arizona Stadium, where the base offense utilized 12 personnel (one running back, two tight ends, two receivers).

Brennan emphasized the importance of tight ends in their offensive approach, highlighting their versatility as pass catchers, blockers, and route runners. With confidence in the talent and abilities of the tight end group, Brennan expressed his satisfaction in their progress.

Arizona’s spring roster boasts five scholarship tight ends, with juniors Keyan Burnett and Roberto Miranda expected to lead the pack. Miranda’s absence from Saturday’s practice provided redshirt freshmen Tyler Powell and Dorian Thomas with additional opportunities to showcase their skills.

Last season, Arizona occasionally deployed two or more tight ends, primarily on running plays. However, Adkins aims for a balanced approach that incorporates both running and passing from this alignment, posing a challenge for opposing defenses.

Burnett and Miranda, despite playing significant snaps last season, recorded minimal receptions, indicating the need for increased involvement in the passing game. Burnett, a former highly touted prospect, opted to remain loyal to Arizona despite considering transfer options after Jedd Fisch’s departure.

Thomas, who briefly entered the transfer portal after the coaching change, decided to stay at Arizona upon meeting Adkins, citing the coach’s influence and connection.

Miranda, a fifth-year player with experience primarily on special teams, presents potential as a breakout performer. Adkins praised Miranda’s maturity, work ethic, and physical attributes, indicating his importance to the team’s plans for the upcoming season.
