Auston Matthews has achieved the most prolific goal-scoring season among all current NHL players.

In a game against the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Centre, Matthews secured his 66th goal of the season during the third period, leading the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-2 victory.

At the start of the season, Tyler Bertuzzi seemed uneasy playing alongside Matthews, and Max Domi struggled to find his place under Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe’s direction. However, both players have now become integral to Matthews’ record-breaking season. Surpassing Alex Ovechkin’s 65 goals in the 2007-08 season, Matthews now holds the record for the greatest number of goals scored in a single season during the salary cap era.

Bertuzzi expressed admiration for Matthews’ achievement, highlighting his dedication and hard work. With four games remaining, the possibility of Matthews reaching 70 goals is within grasp, a feat not accomplished since Teemu Selanne and Alexander Mogilny in 1992-93.

Matthews’ goal against Jake Allen tied him with Dave Keon for third place on the franchise’s all-time goal-scoring list, reaching 365 goals in 558 games. He has maintained a remarkable scoring streak, with goals in six consecutive games and a 12-game points streak, amassing 22 points during this period.

The Leafs, currently placed third in the Atlantic Division, continue to pursue consistency in their performance, aiming to carry their momentum into the postseason.

The synergy between Matthews, Bertuzzi, and Domi has allowed Keefe to diversify his offensive strategy, spreading scoring potential across multiple lines. This depth poses a challenge for opposing teams attempting to solely focus on shutting down Matthews. Additionally, the emergence of players like Matthew Knies on the fourth line adds further strength to the Leafs’ roster, offering versatility and physical dominance.

Keefe praised Knies’ performance against the Devils, underscoring his impact on the game and the potential advantages his presence could offer the team in future matchups, particularly during the playoffs.
