Auston Matthews hopes to create history with his 70th season goal.

After 79 games, the Toronto Maple Leafs have all but guaranteed that they will open the first round of the playoffs away from home against the Florida Panthers.

The final three games for the Toronto Maple Leafs are against the Detroit Red Wings today, Florida the following week, and Tampa the following week.

Although Tampa can still overtake the Leafs, that would only be possible if Tampa lost or the Leafs won one point. It is virtually merely a mathematical possibility at this time.

The Leafs are currently at 106 points, and the maximum they can get is 107. This puts them in a similar situation to Florida. The Leafs’ hopes of playing at home are dashed by a single point, whether won or lost against the Panthers.

Detoit is currently tied with the Washington and the Flyers and one point behind Pittsburgh in their quest to qualify for the playoffs. They might be virtually eliminated by the Leafs tonight, which would be exciting because they defeated New Jersey earlier in the week.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs Detroit Red Wings

There’s only one, very strong reason to watch the game tonight.

The clear favorite to win the Hart Trophy in 2024, Auston Matthews, has 68 goals and needs just two more to reach the elusive 70.

While it wouldn’t be good for my hockey pool playoffs, he might miss the next two games if he does it tonight, which is the perfect situation in real life. Resting their greatest player would be ideal because the Leafs play their final six games over ten nights.

Timothy Liljegren will be the mother

putting himself back in the starting lineup this evening since Joel Edmundson is still sidelined due to injury. Max Domi got hurt, but it looks like his injuries are not too severe, so he will play.

James “the hypocrite” Reimer will start for Detroit, and Ilya Samsonov for the Leafs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have revealed that Matt Murray is healthy and will be sent to the Marlies for a conditioning assignment. This means that the Leafs will have four NHL goalies on their roster and might potentially validate the 2016–17 Penguins comparisons.

In addition, they declared the signing of Caden Weber, a prospect they acquired in a deal during the NHL deal Deadline. It’s the final Hockey Night in Canada of the year, and it looks like a great one. Auston Matthews might score his insanely amazing 70th goal of the year.
