Michigan quarterback JJ McCarthy is generating significant buzz in NFL draft circles. With his National Title-winning background and impressive physical abilities, McCarthy has the potential to shine at the next level. However, his stock might have been even higher if he had played for a school with a more pass-oriented offense.

In the NFL, McCarthy will likely need time to develop, as he may not immediately step into a starting role for a Super Bowl-contending team. Like many quarterbacks, having a star receiver to target will be crucial for his success.

During an interview with CBS Sports, McCarthy was asked which three NFL receivers he would most like to throw to. While two of his choices were expected, his third selection was surprising, particularly because it came from a rival school, Ohio State.

Depending on the evaluator, McCarthy ranks as the fourth to sixth highest-rated quarterback prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft class. He is projected to be a first-round pick, with potential landing spots including the Raiders, Vikings, and Broncos. Teaming up with elite receivers like Justin Jefferson or Davante Adams would undoubtedly aid McCarthy’s transition to the NFL.

McCarthy’s selection of Jaxon Smith-Njigba is intriguing. Despite being a Buckeye, Smith-Njigba stands out as an unconventional pick alongside established stars like Jefferson and Adams. While Smith-Njigba’s rookie season statistics were respectable, he remains a lesser-known name compared to his counterparts.

The Seahawks have notified quarterback Geno Smith that he will remain on the roster for the 2024 season. However, there is widespread skepticism across the league regarding Smith’s ability to serve as the long-term solution at quarterback. Despite being a second-round pick in 2013, Smith’s performance has been inconsistent. While he had an impressive comeback season in 2022, his performance in 2023 returned to more modest levels. At 33 years old, Smith’s trajectory is perceived as declining.

Seattle may explore bringing in J.J. McCarthy to provide competition for the starting quarterback position. McCarthy, a highly regarded prospect, could challenge Smith for the starting role and potentially offer a long-term solution for the Seahawks at quarterback.
