In a recent ESPN Mock Draft, the Memphis Grizzlies were projected to select a talented guard with the 9th overall pick.

The 2023-24 season was challenging for the Memphis Grizzlies due to injuries, though it did grant them a top-10 draft pick. Despite the setbacks, the team retains considerable talent and anticipates a healthy roster for the upcoming season.

Drafting in the Top 10 wasn’t initially anticipated given the team’s talent, but lacking significant trade assets led them to this position. ESPN’s mock draft following the NBA Lottery had the Grizzlies eyeing Stephon Castle from UConn. Here’s their analysis:

The Grizzlies prioritize the best available player and are eager to bounce back to the playoffs post a season plagued by injuries. Although Castle’s shooting raises concerns, his size, defensive versatility, and playmaking offer promising Swiss Army knife capabilities, potentially accelerating his integration into the rotation. Castle’s diverse skill set suggests he can adapt to various lineups, especially if he improves his three-point shooting, making him a compelling fit both short and long term with Memphis’s current roster.

Castle gained prominence at UConn during their National Title run last season, proving pivotal in offense and defense. While Memphis boasts strong guards like Ja Morant and Desmond Bane, selecting Castle would prioritize talent acquisition.

While Castle presents an appealing prospect, the Grizzlies may explore trading the pick for an established player to bolster their roster for immediate contention. If retained, Castle’s athleticism and size offer significant upside, although refining his jump shot remains a priority.
