The Royals might have thought of it as a blockbuster.

Bobby Witt Jr. has signed a multi-million dollar long-term contract that will keep him in Kansas City for a number of years. However, they might have been weighing all of their alternatives, including trading their young star in a blockbuster trade, before a deal was made.

At last, a trade option was considered, according to Craig Mish, the Miami Herald’s beat writer for the Marlins. According to Mish, the Royals entertained the possibility of trading Bobby to Miami in exchange for their best pitcher.

A potential trade idea that would have transferred rookie pitcher Eury Pérez to the Royals in exchange for Bobby Witt Jr. was briefly considered by the Marlins and Royals before to the end of the previous season. Before the 2023 season ended, the notion was at least considered, but no agreement was ever finalized or even put forth.

The new Marlins management believes Pérez is untouchable, according to a source.

Pérez, who made 19 starts in his maiden big league season at age 20, finished last year with a 3.15 ERA and 108 strikeouts in 91 1/3 innings. Baseball America ranked him as the seventh best prospect in the game prior to the season.

It has been claimed that over the past few months, the Royals and Marlins have held multiple trade conversations. They supposedly talked about transferring Salvador Perez to Miami last summer when GM Kim Ng was in charge of the Marlins. The Marlins reportedly offered pitcher Jesús Luzardo to the Royals for Vinnie Pasquantino this off-season, after trading Ng for Peter Bendix.

Although it doesn’t seem like the trade “concept” went very far, it’s fascinating the Royals considered dealing Witt before coming to a deal. Even for a pitcher as excellent as Pérez, a straight-up deal would have been foolish, but it could have given the Royals a young ace and freed up Maikel Garcia to return to his more natural position at shortstop.

Either way, it won’t be a long time before we have to worry about any such trade discussions with Bobby. Next year, he will solely be wearing royal blue as his outfit.
