This year’s SANFLW competition will include up to 24 players who are on the AFLW list.

Up to 24 players that were selected for the AFLW are expected to compete in the South Australian women’s state league tournament, thus there will be a lot of well-known faces in the SANFLW this season.

Ten Crows and fourteen Power players are matched with SANFLW clubs for this season, which begins on Friday, March 1, with the goal of providing players with some playing time during the national competition’s off-season.

The 24 players will be allowed to participate in the first five rounds of the SANFLW season, subject to injuries and commitments to the AFLW program, before heading back to respective AFLW clubs for preseason training.

While six non-aligned players were chosen by SANFLW clubs in a mini-draft on Tuesday, players who had previously played for clubs have rejoined their old teams.

Premiership Bulldog Kirsty Lamb was recruited to North Adelaide after crossing to Port during the December trade period, but the Power stated it was unlikely she would play for the Roosters this year.

Amy Carr-Boyle, an Irish Crow, will also not reach Australia in time to play for the Double Blues.

Even though Port and Adelaide are bitter rivals in the AFLW, some of their players—Jasmin Stewart from Port and Brooke Tonon from Adelaide—will work together in Glenelg.

AFLW competition is still a few months away, therefore participating in the SANFLW club allows athletes to get extra top-notch football practice in advance of the season.

Phil Harper, the manager of Adelaide’s women’s football team, stated that players would benefit from practicing and competing for their SANFLW team.

“There is a big break between seasons, so for some of our players it’s an important part of their off-season programs,” Harper explained.

“Gaining some game experience for players who didn’t play the entire season the previous year is a terrific way to prepare them for the preseason.

“It’s fantastic for our players to have the support of the SANFLW and its clubs and to be able to play in such a strong competition.”
