BREAKING: Former 49ers DE Chase Young signs a $13 million, one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints
At just 24, Chase Young is still quite young.
Because of all the ups and downs in his NFL career, it feels like he has been there for a lot longer than that. After being selected second overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, he became an instant star with the Washington Commanders before going missing for a period due to injuries. After being moved to the San Francisco 49ers for the previous season, he didn’t really contribute to the team until the Super Bowl, when he showed up with a sack and some other big plays.
Young is now on to the next chapter of his NFL career. The New Orleans Saints reached a deal with Young on Monday afternoon.
Even Young himself still has faith that he may develop into the player he was so good as a rookie in Washington and at Ohio State.
Hurt injuries slow down Chase Young
A few years ago, there would have been wild speculation about a massive bidding war if Young had been a free agency this offseason.
Young was Ohio State’s most dominant college player. He was one of the few defensive players to be a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. No one questioned his selection as the second overall pick. In several years, he was among the top defensive end prospects available in the draft.
Young’s debut season in the NFL went roughly as planned. He was the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and a master manipulator. He had a poorer second season before tearing his ACL. He took his time getting better. In his combined second and third seasons, he had 1.5 sacks. His fifth-year option was not picked up by the Commanders, and he was traded to the 49ers during the previous season.
Young had some time to settle into his job because of the 49ers’ depth on defense, but San Francisco moved him up to the starting lineup at the beginning of the postseason. It was perfect timing for Young to look explosive in the Super Bowl, as he was about to enter free agency.
