After the weekend’s results, Carlton Palmer is certain that there will be three competitors vying for the Championship title.

Ipswich Town and Leeds United, according to Carlton Palmer, have a chance to overtake Leicester City in a three-way contest for the Championship.

The fight for automatic promotion has been among the fiercest and most competitive in recent years, with the bar being set at an unprecedented height at the top of the table.

Leeds in particular has been setting a fierce pace lately, which has forced Leicester back into the mix after the Foxes lost two games in a row, most recently 3-1 at Elland Road.

Daniel Farke’s team defeated them in the first half of the season and went on to win nine straight league games in 2024. They also won 11 out of 12 games across all competitions, with the only loss on their record coming in the FA Cup against Plymouth.

During the Christmas break, Leeds faced challenges and had to catch up, while Ipswich needed to improve in the last few weeks after losing ground in January and the first few days of February.

Nevertheless, Southampton has dropped three of its past four games, enabling Leicester and Ipswich to go ahead by five points.

The games Southampton has coming up, including against Sunderland and Preston, and Ipswich’s next six against five teams in the bottom half could prove to be pivotal.

Leeds survived maybe their most difficult encounter to date and will play four teams that are either threatened with relegation or have already been demoted.

Before the season is out, there will undoubtedly be a lot more turns and turns, and the three participating clubs might easily trade places several times for second place. Leicester, though, might very well be involved and visible.

Carlton Palmer, a former Leeds player and former England international, is optimistic that his old team will get promoted this year, but he hasn’t ruled out Leeds or Ipswich overtaking Leicester.
In an exclusive interview with Football League World, he gave his assessment of the competition for promotion to the second division, saying, “To be honest, five games ago, if you had asked me if anyone would stop Leicester from winning the title, I would have replied definitely not.

“But Ipswich Town and Leeds United? These two squads are really picking up the pace. Leeds has won six straight games, while Ipswich has won four straight after initially struggling.

They trail Leicester by six points with 72 points apiece, and Leicester has dropped its previous two games against Leeds and Middlesbrough.

“As I have stated, there are six points in it. Leeds should come out strong, and Daniel Farke has really impressed me.

“The game is on. Now it’s all play.

It will be intriguing to watch if either or both of them are able to catch Leicester.

“I still support Leeds to win promotion, as I did at the beginning of the season.

“Leicester must come to the rescue. After that, they have some tough games, including a huge FA Cup match on Tuesday.

“You would think that QPR should be winning at home, but they also have to worry about Sunderland and Hull City, who are also vying for a play-off spot.

“Leicester has some challenging games coming up, and I think Leeds or Ipswich might succeed. They might be apprehended.”
