BREAKING: Jalen Hurts, according to an Eagles wide receiver, is the “greatest leader I’ve ever seen.”

The Eagles have numerous problems. Among them, Jalen Hurts may not have the most leadership qualities.

Philadelphia is the location. The City of Brotherly Love’s official pastime is essentially assigning blame.

It also makes sense that the highest paid football player in the city’s history is under investigation for his involvement in the Eagles’ historic collapse, which saw the team go from a 10-1 powerhouse to a 1-6 record and a first-round playoff exit.

Jalen Hurts did not perform as well on the field in 2023 as he did in 2022. That is an undeniable truth. It’s debatable if this is the result of defenses adapting correctly, persistent injuries, or a complete collapse. But was the team’s dismal performance also a result of his leadership in the locker room?

Though opinions of Hurts’ leadership style have been expressed on talk radio and in local blogs, it is impossible to tell for sure unless you spend every day in the NovaCare Complex with the player. Additionally, this week, a wide receiver Britain Covey statement came under criticism.

In a Jeff McLane story written for the Philadelphia Inquirer, the punt returner and backup wideout said the following:

“I’ve played for coaches before that claim to have an open-door policy and their door is always open, but they’re really intimidating. And I think that Jalen is similar to that in that he has an open-door policy, but because of his personality, at times, if you [are a new player and] haven’t been around him enough, it can be a little bit intimidating.” [Inquirer]

Some local pundits, including Barrett Brooks, misinterpreted the quote. Here’s a video of him essentially twisting Covey’s words to say that Hurts was unapproachable as a leader:
