Since the Netflix documentary on Johnny Manziel was released, he has been more forthcoming about his personal life. However, the former quarterback has since disclosed more details regarding other facets of his life. The truth bomb he revealed on Texas football recruiting him was one noteworthy subject.
In an exclusive interview with Shannon Sharpe on Club Shay Shay, Johnny Manziel disclosed that the Longhorns selected him to play safety rather than quarterback. It seems that the Texas football team wasn’t completely sure how to make the most of Manziel’s physical prowess at the time.
“I believe that was a major factor in my decision not to attend the University of Texas. Manziel stated, “They wouldn’t pull the trigger on me and my size at any position.” They desired that I play it safe. Me, safety. Shannon, there ain’t got no white safeties out there.
The idea of Johnny Manziel playing safety is absurd. He’s too little for that position, to start with, which is also what he sarcastically heard about playing quarterback. Safety personnel are typically over 200 pounds and six feet tall. Manziel stated he weighed just about 175 pounds and was under six feet tall when Texas football started wooing him. However, this was a period in football history when extremely athletic quarterbacks were unheard of.
But it was his athleticism that made him a Texas A&M star, and he was fortunate to be given the opportunity to play quarterback by the Aggies. During his college career, Manziel rose to prominence as one of the most well-known stars in both sports and pop culture.
He was a redshirt freshman who won the Heisman and produced incredible highlight plays. Johnny Manziel concluded his career with 7,820 passing yards, 63 passing touchdowns, 22 interceptions, 2,169 running yards, and 30 rushing touchdowns in just two years with the Aggies. He was among the most accurate passes in the country with a completion percentage of 68.9.
