— TALLAHASSEE, FL North Carolina easily defeated Florida State 35–11 on Saturday thanks to four touchdown runs and a 49-yard TD reception by Omarion Hampton.
Hampton now leads UNC (5-4, 2/3 Atlantic Coast Conference) with 14 touchdowns after amassing 172 rushing yards and 93 receiving yards.
Although he doesn’t use many words, Hampton is a man of many yards. Coach Mack Brown urged him to make a speech in the locker room after the game. It was brief: “Well done, O-line.”
The senior has more than 3,000 yards in his career and is only the fourth player from UNC to have five running touchdowns in a single game.
“It’s definitely my O-line because I can’t do it alone,” Hampton stated. “Today they went nuts. It seemed to me that I simply had to yell them out. The mindset of trying to get every play and all that is basically all that is involved.
Brown, a graduate of Florida State, defeated his alma mater for the first time. He entered the game with an 0-8 record from two stints at UNC and a 0-3 record against the Seminoles when attending Tulane in the mid-1980s.
According to the veteran college coach, both his team and the offensive line have been getting better. He took pleasure in seeing UNC stop Florida State to 42 yards on 28 attempts while amassing 289 rushing yards.
“In college football you got to run the ball,” Brown said. “You’ve got to stop the run. Running for 289 yards against that defense is really, really special.”
Brock Glenn threw for 123 yards, including a 28-yard touchdown to Ja’Khi Douglas, as Florida State (1-8, 1-7) lost its fifth straight game. Luke Kromenhoek also completed 2 of 7 passes for 36 yards, but he had two interceptions in the fourth quarter.
The Seminoles managed just 201 offensive yards and scored a season-low 11 points.
“Very disappointing outcome,” Florida State coach Mike Norvell said. “They did a great job and really dominated the game in pretty much all phases — offense, defense, special teams. We have to be better than what we put on display.”
Ryan Fitzgerald made a 56-yard field-goal attempt in the first half for the Seminoles.
