According to reports, a Sheffield Wednesday player is “set for talks” with a competing Championship team.
Many of Sheffield Wednesday’s players in S6 face contract expirations at the end of this month, thus their futures are unknown.
New contracts have been agreed to by Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer, among others. Josh Windass, a striker, is rumored to be close to signing a new contract.
A few players, such as Di’Shon Bernard, who has been offered new terms but is attracting interest from elsewhere, are still up for debate.
Goalie Ben Hamer, a free agent, is rumored to be joining the team, while it appears like Cameron Dawson will be leaving.
Will Vaulks, 30, was voted the Owls Player of the Season after making 34 appearances in the Championship and dishing up three assists, but his future is still uncertain.
However, a rival Championship team is now scheduled to hold discussions with the Welsh midfielder.
Will Vaulks and Oxford United are “set for talks.”
Vaulks is reportedly “set for talks” with Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship opponents.
According to journalist Joe Crann on X, Oxford, who advanced to the Championship last season through the League One play-offs, “are keen to try and sign” Vaulks when his Sheffield Wednesday contract expires.
Vaulks has been offered terms to stay at Hillsborough for the upcoming season. He has spent the last two seasons there. For Sheffield Wednesday, he has made 80 league appearances, contributing five assists and two goals.
Vaulks, formerly of Cardiff City and Rotherham United, garnered recognition during the previous season mostly for his work with Danny Rohl.
According to Sofascore, he finished the season with the most tackles and interceptions per game despite frequently providing excellent coverage in front of the defense.
Should Will Vaulks stay at Sheffield Wednesday
After an impressive 2023/24 season, Vaulks certainly has options to stay in the Championship, and it may be down to whether or not he fancies a change.
A move to Oxford United would certainly be a new challenge with the U’s likely to be fighting near the bottom end of the Championship next season.
Sheffield Wednesday though, given their form under Rohl, may well be challenging at the top end of the table next time round, so it could be a chance for Vaulks to challenge for promotion to the Premier League.
Given the new contract offer, the club plainly wants him to stay, and if he leaves, someone will need to step up.
However, Vaulks’ departure presents Rohl with an opportunity to bring in a new player and shape them into the type of player he wants to be.
Vaulks will undoubtedly have a difficult decision to make.
