One of Sunderland’s most promising prospects is expected to join with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Sunderland set to lose Josh Robertson

Josh Robertson, 18, is set to depart Sunderland as Brighton look to land the highly-rated midfielder.

According to The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope (via his personal X account), The Seagulls are reportedly closing in on a deal for Robertson.

The young midfield player is rumored to have traveled to the south coast to finalize his move, taking advantage of the uncertainty surrounding his contract position in the North East on behalf of the Premier League team.

In the summer, Robertson’s contract was scheduled to expire.

With eight goals and one assist in 12 games this season, the midfielder has shown promise for Sunderland’s under-18 team (transfermarkt).

Robertson is acquired by Brighton, dealing Sunderland a setback.
This is a setback given the Black Cats’ recruitment strategy.

Younger players have been watched closely under Kristjaan Speakman’s direction since they have the potential to grow and eventually be sold as assets.

When looking at Sunderland’s summer recruitment, it was clear to see the type of player they were interested in.

Jenson Seelt, Jobe Bellingham, Eliezer Mayenda, Luis Semedo, Nectarios Triantis, Timothee Pembele, Adil Aouchiche and Nathan Bishop are all under the age of 24, with three under 20.

The strategy has always been to look forward, therefore letting a player like Robertson would irritate people.

At the Academy of Light, others like Dan Neil and Chris Rigg have also advanced through the ranks. Neil is the ideal illustration of a player who has emerged and performed admirably in the starting lineup.

Speakman and the board ought to give some of their young players who are approaching the conclusion of their contracts more consideration in light of Robertson’s impending exit.

Is Sunderland’s hiring strategy effective?
The recruiting strategy used by Sunderland is undoubtedly intriguing.

There are a lot of benefits. The success of the first XI will depend on how well Michael Beale and his coaching staff can develop these young players. Younger players are also thought of as significant assets, which might result in one or two high-profile sales.

For those at The Stadium of Light, failing to get the most out of players like Bellingham and Semedo could prove to be a costly error.

Building a successful side business also requires experience; relying too much on youth might be dangerous.

Due to their obstinate hiring practices, the Black Cats may have lost out on one or two objectives; Kieffer Moore, a striker for Bournemouth, is rumored to be joining Ipswich Town. The 31-year-old would have been the perfect choice to get Sunderland’s play-off campaign back on course.

Beale has to bolster his forward corps because there are only a few hours remaining. His young alternatives might cover the gap, but if an experienced Championship frontman showed up before the 11 p.m. deadline, Sunderland supporters would undoubtedly feel more optimistic about their chances.

Should the Mackems’ play-off push fail, the board will be under a lot of scrutiny for failing to sign a forward.
