Wednesday marks the culmination of an era in Los Angeles as the city’s two NBA powerhouses, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers, prepare to face off for the final time this season. This matchup holds particular significance as it signifies the end of an era of co-tenancy at the same downtown arena, a setup that has persisted since the 1999-2000 season. Over the years, the close proximity of their locker rooms, less than 100 feet apart, has given rise to the moniker “Hallway Series.” However, with the Clippers set to move to their new state-of-the-art arena in nearby Inglewood, California, after this season, this storied rivalry will take on a new chapter.

The Lakers made a significant breakthrough earlier this season, snapping an 11-game losing streak against the Clippers on November 1st. They secured another victory on January 7th, although the Clippers managed to notch a win in their subsequent meeting two weeks later. A win on Wednesday would give the Lakers their first season series victory over the Clippers since they faced off three times during the 2011-12 campaign.

Entering Wednesday’s showdown, the Lakers find themselves navigating through an inconsistent season, having lost two of their last three games, including a 123-113 defeat to the Phoenix Suns on Sunday. Despite a strong start to the game, the Lakers were plagued by a sluggish offensive and defensive performance, allowing the Suns to amass 45 points in the first quarter. Lakers’ coach Darvin Ham expressed frustration over perceived inconsistencies in refereeing decisions, while star player LeBron James emphasized the need for improved defensive intensity.

On the other hand, the Clippers have encountered some turbulence after a promising start, with a 3-4 record since February 7th. Questions have arisen regarding their defense, which had previously propelled them towards the top of the Western Conference standings. Following a 123-107 loss to the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, Clippers’ coach Tyronn Lue emphasized the importance of mental focus and sharpening their gameplay during the two-day break between games. Despite missing Paul George due to injury, Norman Powell led the Clippers with 21 points in Sunday’s defeat, while Kawhi Leonard and James Harden struggled with their shooting efficiency.

As the Lakers and Clippers gear up for their final showdown of the season, both teams aim to address their respective challenges and finish strong before heading into the postseason.
