Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who made a stunning comeback after experiencing a cardiac arrest in a January 2023 game, is now a finalist for the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award. Despite facing a life-threatening situation, Hamlin’s heartbeat was restored on the field, and he made a remarkable recovery, being discharged from the hospital after nine days and cleared for full football activities within three months.

In the 2023 regular season, Hamlin participated in five games for the Bills and was inactive for the remaining 12, though he did play in both of his team’s playoff matchups. Notably, during the playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Hamlin took on a significant role in a crucial fake punt but fell short of a first down.

The other finalists for the Comeback Player of the Year award include quarterbacks Joe Flacco (Cleveland Browns), Baker Mayfield (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), Matthew Stafford (Los Angeles Rams), and Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins).

The award’s winner will be announced during the NFL Honors, the league’s awards special, on February 8 in Las Vegas, leading up to the Super Bowl on February 11. In the previous NFL Honors, Hamlin delivered a heartfelt speech while the medical staff that played a crucial role in saving his life stood behind him on stage.

It’s worth noting that Hamlin also received the NFL Players Association’s Alan Page Community Award, recognizing his dedication to positively impacting his team’s city and communities across the country.
