West Ham United manager David Moyes expressed his frustration with the decision not to award his team a penalty during their Europa League defeat to Freiburg. Despite the loss in the first leg of the Europa League last-16 tie in Germany, Moyes believed that his side should have been granted a penalty deep into stoppage time.

Following the match, Moyes was visibly upset and immediately approached referee Alejandro Hernandez. While acknowledging that West Ham could have performed better and secured victory regardless of the refereeing decisions, Moyes criticized Edson Alvarez for his role in Freiburg’s goal, emphasizing the importance of avoiding costly mistakes.

However, Moyes asserted that West Ham deserved the penalty in the late stages of the game, describing it as an unmistakable and straightforward decision. The controversial incident left many observers, including fans and pundits, baffled by the referee’s call.

David Moyes addressed reporters after the Europa League encounter at The Europa-Park Stadion last night, revealing that the officials had provided him with an explanation for why they chose not to award West Ham a penalty against Freiburg.

Moyes emphasized precisely why the officials opted not to award his team a late penalty when Freiburg’s Noah Weisshaupt handled the ball in his own box. He stated, “They’re trying to claim there might have been a slight push, and that’s why it wasn’t given, but they should have restarted the game with a free-kick if they said it was a push.” Moyes argued that any alleged push wasn’t significant enough to warrant a free-kick, and thus, it shouldn’t have factored into the decision. He pointed out, “The boy has two arms above his head.” Moyes’ conversation with referee Alejandro Hernandez after the match indicates that he received this explanation from the official. Moyes criticized the decision, asserting that Tomas Soucek didn’t commit any foul on Weisshaupt that would have led to the handball.

However, it’s important to acknowledge that West Ham should not find themselves dependent on a penalty decision to secure a result against a weaker Freiburg team. The team’s performance on the night was subpar, and it’s imperative for them to bounce back next week at the London Stadium.
