Owner of West Ham David Sullivan has attacked Birmingham City, a previous team, for their “incompetence” after rejecting a revised payment arrangement intended to support the EFL.

The Hammers were among the clubs that voted against the agreement, which caused a stir in the community after the Premier League and EFL were unable to reach an agreement earlier this month over the transfer of funds down the pyramid.

Additionally, the current Irons owner and former Blues owner gave an explanation of his choice in an interview with The Sun on March 29. He used his former team as evidence for why it wouldn’t be just for Premier League clubs to accept the new rules.

“The Championship is the system’s flaw,” he declared. “These clubs are struggling financially as a result of paying excessive agent fees and salary; some managers receive £1 million year.

“Managers and players in Serie B, Italy’s second division, don’t make that kind of money each week. Instead, they make between £30,000 and £40,000.

“What makes us think the EFL can operate with an additional £50m or £100m if they can’t with the money we pay them now? They ought to quit wasting money and start handling their finances more responsibly. However, as they are vying for a spot in the Premier League, they don’t want to.

“We will be exactly where we are today in five years if we give the EFL what they want.”

There are owners in the EFL who are wealthier than Premier League owners. But, some teams have encountered difficulties as a result of their owners’ desire for promotion and eventual frustration.

Then there’s Birmingham, my former club. When they were close to making the playoffs, they fired their capable manager, John Eustace, in order to sign Wayne Rooney as a marquee player. It ruined it.

“Why should we support their incapacity?”

Is West Ham being overly cautious, or does David Sullivan have a point?
While Sullivan’s comments regarding clubs needing greater financial management and accountability have some merit, these smaller clubs also require assistance.

Birmingham undoubtedly came in extremely wealthy new owners and attempted to be ambitious by signing Wayne Rooney, but both moves backfired, and they now need to bear the consequences.

Although it’s unfair to be bailed out by Premier League teams, the English leagues are the most competitive and entertaining in the world because of the money that moves down the pyramid.

The leagues must come to a mutually agreeable solution that works for everyone, but West Ham should not be forced to take a contract they don’t think is appropriate for them.

In the end, Sullivan is correct and incorrect. West Ham is being frugal, but they have every right to be, and Championship teams really need to improve their self-management.
