BREAKING NEWS: Doug McDermott, the former player for the Spurs, bids the fans farewell following his trade, saying, “Thank you for the memories.”

Prior to the trade deadline on Thursday afternoon, the San Antonio Spurs moved veteran shooter Doug McDermott to the Indiana Pacers after three seasons with the franchise. Marcus Morris, a forward, cash considerations, and a potential second-round selection were acquired by the Spurs.

This season, McDermott played in 46 games for San Antonio, averaging 6.0 points and 1.2 assists per game. Even though he played for a Spurs team that missed the playoffs during his tenure, he nevertheless took the time to send a farewell text to the San Antonio Express-News, thanking fans and the community.

“I’m going to miss being a Spur,” McDermott stated in an email to the Express-News. “They provide the best care possible for their players. I will always treasure the friendships and memories I formed over my 2.5 years in the program.”

McDermott was traded to the Chicago Bulls on draft night in 2014 after being selected in the first round by the Denver Nuggets. He later moved to Indiana in 2018 and spent three seasons as a player for the Pacers. According to him, the familiarity will make the process run lot more smoothly.

“Couldn’t be more excited to join a place I’m familiar with in Indiana,” McDermott tweeted. “It makes today much simpler to be back and play for the team that helped shape me into the player I am today. I will always have a particular place in my heart for San Antonio, and I am grateful to all of the Spurs supporters for their years of support.”

This season, McDermott was a member of the Spurs for 46 games, averaging 15.2 minutes per game, 6.0 points, and 1.2 assists. On December 29, he had a season-high 18 points in a 134–128 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Perhaps McDermott’s best game in his three seasons with the Spurs occurred on April 2, 2023, when the team defeated the Sacramento Kings 142-134 in overtime. McDermott scored a game-high 30 points off the bench on 4 of 8 deep field goal attempts against a squad that would go on to make the playoffs.

When the Spurs play the Pacers at the Frost Bank Center on Sunday, March 3, McDermott will shortly be returning to San Antonio.
