Florida’s Jacksonville — The NFL revealed on Friday that there would be 34 compensatory picks in the draft the following month. The teams that received these picks were the Los Angeles Rams and the San Francisco 49ers.

The NFL’s minority hiring effort gave the 49ers and Rams the most picks (each team receiving a special compensatory selection), while the Philadelphia Eagles were awarded four. Three were each received by the New York Jets, Green Bay Packers, and New Orleans Saints.

In the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth (two) rounds are San Francisco’s selections. The Rams have selections in the third, sixth, and seventh rounds (three each). The highest compensatory pick (number 96 overall) went to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In the draft held April 25–27, compensatory picks were awarded to 14 teams overall. Selections are given out in Rounds 3 through 7.

Teams that lose more or better compensatory free agents than they signed the season before are rewarded compensatory picks. Compensation-free agents are chosen by the NFL using a method that takes into account playing time, postseason honors, and salary.

Additionally, if a minority employee is hired as a head coach or primary football executive by another team, a modification to the collective bargaining agreement enacted in 2020 grants teams a special compensating selection in the third round.

Raheem Morris, the defensive coordinator for the Rams at the time, was named head coach of the Atlanta Falcons in January. Following the 2022 season, the 49ers were awarded their second of three special compensatory picks as a result of the hirings of Texans coach DeMeco Ryans and Titans general manager Ran Carthon.
