Joey McGuire, the football coach of Texas Tech, named the team’s five captains for 2024 on Wednesday.

Tahj Brooks, the running back, Behren Morton, the offensive tackle, and linebackers Bryce Ramirez and Jacob Rodriguez are the five. This is the first time McGuire has appointed permanent captains. He had previously appointed a senior committee made up of members of each post group.

In the announcement, McGuire stated, “These five individuals have earned their place as a captain within this program.” “I think it’s critical that we continue to cultivate future leaders in our program as we head into the offseason. Even though these five have been selected to serve as our set captains for the forthcoming season, I have given them the task of assisting us in locating the people who will ultimately comprise an independent leadership committee that will enable us to keep pushing our program to new heights.”

With 1,538 yards, Brooks finished the 2017 season as the fourth-leading rusher in the FBS. His 290 carries also ranked second among all college football players. In the Red Raiders’ Independence Bowl triumph over California, Morton passed for 1,757 yards and 15 touchdowns, three of which came in the final quarter. Rogers started 42 games in his career during that game.

After recovering in September 2022 from multiple tibia and fibula fractures, Ramirez participated in 11 games in 2023. Rodriguez was a first-team linebacker at the start of the 2023 season, but a foot injury ended his season. He played in five games in the second half of the season after his recovery.

The Red Raiders started off-season winter fitness last week. Astound Broadband Stadium in Midland will host the spring game on April 20. Spring practice will start on March 19.
