The Harbaugh brothers are set to once again coach simultaneously in the NFL for the upcoming season as Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh has reached a deal with the Los Angeles Chargers to become the team’s next head coach. This move comes shortly after leading his alma mater to a national championship, bringing about significant changes in both college football and the NFL.

John Harbaugh, currently at the helm of the Baltimore Ravens, expressed his congratulations and thoughts during a press conference before the AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs. He shared, “I have [congratulated him]. My thoughts are, ‘We play him next year.’ So we’re looking forward to all of it. Just very happy for him. Proud of him. Excited for him. Excited for his family.”

John continued by mentioning that Jim’s family was ready for the new opportunity, saying, “I heard — my mom and dad told me — that he called back in the evening and he found out that all of his kids starting with Addie and Katie had their bags packed already. They were ready to go. So they’re excited, too. It’s going to be great. He’s well-deserved. And I’ll say this; the Chargers just got themselves one great coach.”

The head-to-head coaching series between the Harbaugh brothers has been one-sided, with John holding a 2-0 record against his sibling. Their first meeting occurred in 2011, during Jim’s inaugural season with the San Francisco 49ers, resulting in a 16-6 victory for John’s Ravens on Thanksgiving Day. The second clash took place a year later in Super Bowl XLVII, marking the first coaching matchup between brothers in Super Bowl history. John’s team emerged victorious, securing a 34-31 win and the Lombardi Trophy.

As John’s Ravens approach another AFC title game, potentially leading to a Super Bowl appearance, the prospect of Jim attending the pivotal contest raises questions about his attire. John amusingly commented, “I actually thought about that. Will Jim be wearing Ravens gear if he comes in for the game this weekend? I don’t know the answer to that. We may have to require it, perhaps. That’s a good question.”

Jim will have an opportunity to secure his first win over his brother next season when the Chargers host the Ravens at SoFi Stadium. The specific date for this highly-anticipated matchup is yet to be announced.

The now-former Michigan coach has long dabbled in the NFL; in recent years, he had many job interviews but consistently chose to stay at his alma university. He is now leaving to become the helm of a team where he was a quarterback, bringing an end to the protracted drama that saw him linked to other openings during the previous off seasons.

In the immediate wake of Harbaugh’s departure, the primary concern at Michigan is who will take his place as head coach. Sherrone Moore, the offensive coordinator, guided the Wolverines to victory in every game he led as head coach during Jim Harbaugh’s two suspensions at the start and close of the 2023 regular season. Moore was a clear choice for the full-time position.
