Upon Kevin Dotson’s arrival in Los Angeles in late August, he recognized the significant opportunity that lay ahead, joining the Rams as an offensive lineman in the final year of his rookie contract.

Dotson made a substantial impact, proving to be a key player in the success of the revamped Los Angeles offensive line, particularly in enhancing the team’s running game. Starting at right guard from Week 4 onward, he concluded the 2023 regular season as the top-graded run-blocker among all guards, according to Pro Football Focus. Additionally, Dotson played a crucial role in protecting quarterback Matthew Stafford, ensuring his jersey stayed clean.

As Dotson heads into the offseason as an impending unrestricted free agent, the Rams acknowledge the competitive market he is likely to attract, given his impressive performance. General manager Les Snead expressed the team’s readiness to engage in the market, recognizing the importance of maintaining continuity along the offensive line, a lesson learned from the stability achieved in 2022 and 2023.

Snead disclosed plans to establish a communication timeline with Dotson’s agent, outlining the team’s approach. The real momentum is expected to start on March 11 at 9 a.m. Pacific time when teams are permitted to initiate contract negotiations with agents of unrestricted free agents from other teams. By then, the Rams should have a clearer understanding of Dotson’s market value and the competition for his services.

Dotson expressed satisfaction with the change of scenery and the positive environment provided by the city of Los Angeles and the Rams, potentially favoring the team’s chances of retaining him. However, if retaining Dotson proves challenging, the Rams, with a healthier cap situation this season, have the flexibility to explore free agency for his replacement. The draft is also considered an option, as demonstrated by the selection of Steve Avila in the second round last year, showcasing the potential to find a plug-and-play offensive lineman.
