Penrith Panthers
Breaking news: Kikau is gearing up emotionally to confront his former team.
Canterbury Bulldogs forward Viliame Kikau is determined to maintain his composure as he gears up to face his former team, Penrith Panthers, for the first time since his departure.
Having secured consecutive NRL premierships with the Panthers in 2021 and 2022, Kikau’s move to Canterbury last season was marked by injuries, preventing him from facing Penrith in 2023. However, he is set to confront his former teammates at BlueBet Stadium on Friday night, anticipating an emotional encounter.
Reflecting on the upcoming match, Kikau expressed mixed feelings, stating, “It’s weird.” He emphasized the need to approach the game with the same preparation as any other, despite the expected excitement and heightened emotions.
Maintaining his professional stance, Kikau, along with his teammate Stephen Crichton, plans to adhere to their usual game-day routine. While acknowledging the significance of the match, he remains focused on the challenge ahead and looks forward to testing himself against one of the top teams in the competition.
Kikau retains strong connections with his former Panthers teammates and continues to reside in Penrith. Alongside captain Stephen Crichton, who is also facing his former club for the first time, Kikau is part of a group of ex-Panthers players now with the Bulldogs. Their influence has contributed to Canterbury’s resurgence this season under coach Cameron Ciraldo.
Anticipating a competitive clash, Panthers five-eighth Jarome Luai expects a tough contest against the Bulldogs, noting their solid defensive structure under Ciraldo’s guidance.
Despite the departures of several players from Penrith, including Luai himself and others set to join different clubs next season, the Panthers remain a formidable force in the NRL. Luai credits the club’s talent development program for seamlessly transitioning new players into key roles.
While Luai looks forward to his future challenges with the Wests Tigers, he remains focused on finishing his time with Penrith on a high note.
With the match approaching, Kikau is focused on his performance and is aware of the challenge posed by Panthers’ standout player Nathan Cleary. However, he remains confident in his abilities and the Bulldogs’ game plan, emphasizing the importance of sticking to their strategies for success.
