The most successful driver in Formula One history, Lewis Hamilton, is making a noteworthy departure from Mercedes to join Ferrari, the most successful team in F1 history. Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, will share the track with Charles Leclerc, who secured a long-term contract last week, starting from the 2025 season. This move leaves Ferrari’s two-time race winner, Carlos Sainz, without a car and creates an opportunity for a seat at Mercedes alongside George Russell.

Although the 39-year-old Hamilton signed a two-year contract with Mercedes last summer, an exit clause has allowed him to make the switch to Ferrari, causing a significant shake-up in the sport reminiscent of his move from McLaren to Mercedes in 2013. Leclerc expressed his admiration for Hamilton as a potential teammate back in June when rumors about the move started circulating. Ferrari had also acknowledged discussions with Hamilton in 2019 when he was the reigning world champion.

This move signifies the end of an era at Mercedes, where Hamilton has been a dominant force since his arrival in 2013 from McLaren. It also raises questions about the future of Carlos Sainz, whose contract concludes at the end of 2024. Hamilton’s partnership with Charles Leclerc at Ferrari, following Leclerc’s recent contract extension, indicates a dynamic duo for the upcoming seasons.

The last British driver to race for Ferrari was Eddie Irvine in 1999. Despite signing exceptional talents like Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel since 2007, Ferrari has not secured a drivers’ championship. The team has faced challenges such as mechanical failures and strategy errors in recent years but remains a prestigious name in the world of Formula One.
