At the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego on Saturday, Frenchman Matthieu Pavon made history by shooting a 3-under par 69 to become the first golfer from his country to win on the PGA Tour in the modern era.

Pavon played on the South Course at Torrey Pines and recovered from an early bogey at the par-4 first hole to finish the round with five birdies and just one more bogey. An 8-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole helped him finish the week at 13-under 275, just missing out on Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard, who tied for second place with a 12-under 276 after a 2-under 70 on Saturday.

In his post-victory reflection, Pavon acknowledged the importance of the feat for French golf overall as well as for himself. With this victory, he becomes the first Frenchman to win a PGA Tour tournament since the Second World War, which is a historic first in the Tour’s modern history, which dates back to 1968.

In just his 11th career PGA Tour event, Pavon highlighted how unbelievable his achievement was and thanked the PGA TOUR for giving European golfers a chance to compete against the best in the world.

Two strokes behind the leader, Stephan Jaeger, Jake Knapp, and Nate Lashley tied for third place. With a one-stroke lead going into the last round, Jaeger acknowledged that it had been a difficult weekend, but he was happy with where he was at in his quest for his first Tour victory.

Notably, Kevin Yu of Taiwan tied for sixth place at 10-under 278 with Beau Hossler and Tony Finau after shooting 67 after finishing T3 at The American Express. Max Homa, however, was unable to retain his championship and ended Saturday’s round tied for 13th at 8-under 280 after shooting 69.
