Nashville SC has announced the hiring of B.J. Callaghan as their new head coach, marking a significant transition for the club. Callaghan, previously an assistant under U.S. men’s national team head coach Gregg Berhalter, notably served as interim manager during the team’s successful Concacaf Nations League campaign in 2023. He will officially assume his role with Nashville on July 22, debuting as head coach nine days later when the team faces Mazatlán F.C. in the 2024 Leagues Cup at GEODIS Park.

General manager Mike Jacobs expressed enthusiasm about the appointment, highlighting Callaghan’s extensive experience across various levels of soccer, particularly within the MLS ecosystem. Callaghan’s leadership qualities and ability to maximize player and team potential were emphasized as crucial attributes for Nashville’s future success.

The move comes after Nashville operated under interim manager Rumba Munthali following the departure of longtime head coach Gary Smith in May. Smith, instrumental in guiding Nashville from their United Soccer League origins into their inaugural MLS season in 2020, led the team to four consecutive Audi MLS Cup Playoffs appearances and the 2023 Leagues Cup final.

Callaghan, a 43-year-old native of New Jersey, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead Nashville SC, underscoring his appreciation for Berhalter’s mentorship during his tenure with the USMNT. His appointment signals a new chapter for Nashville as they aim to build upon their current standing in the Eastern Conference under his guidance.
