BREAKING NEWS: NFL Insider: The Philadelphia Eagles may trade Jalen Hurts this offseason following a “dysfunction” in the locker room.

Tuesday, an NFL insider speculated that the Philadelphia Eagles would trade quarterback Jalen Hurts in order to make yet another significant offseason move. The Eagles are reorganizing their coaching staff in preparation for the 2024 campaign when the idea is put up.

For the upcoming season, the Eagles are anticipated to have new offensive and defensive coordinators. Nevertheless, following a run of six consecutive losses, head coach Nick Sirianni will remain with the Eagles.

The locker room of the Philadelphia Eagles was loud.

During that losing streak, the Eagles’ locker room was the source of ugly rumors. As previously reported by GH Media, in late December, a source publicly questioned Hurts’ style of leadership:

Eagles teammates, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, are not happy with how Hurts has carried out the leadership responsibilities in the locker room this season:

Hurts undoubtedly possesses a great deal of the intangibles necessary to be a top quarterback, including exceptional running and passing skills, a sincere work ethic, and the determination to put in the necessary effort to be the best. However, according to team insiders, the Eagles want their franchise quarterback to be a little more forthcoming in the locker room

Players hold Hurts in high regard. He is not a concern for the team off the field. The Eagles want him to stay true to himself, but they also want him to learn when to step outside of himself and show leadership, especially when times are difficult.

This winter, there were other rumors circulating around the Eagles camp. A.J. Brown, the wide receiver, called a players-only meeting to talk about the issues facing the club.

The contract for Jalen Hurts is trade-friendly.

NBC Sports’ Mike Florio believes that in December and January, there was a “general dysfunction” in the locker room. The terms of Hurts’ contract are generally benign for a commercial agreement to occur:

While there isn’t a specific indication that the Eagles or Hurts are actively seeking a fresh start, there’s a prevailing sense of dysfunction within the team’s locker room, particularly towards the end of the season. It appears as though something significant occurred, something not publicly disclosed and perhaps never to be revealed. Whatever transpired could be substantial enough to instigate interest from either the team or the player in pursuing a change.

In contrast to many lucrative quarterback contracts, Hurts’ deal is relatively straightforward—if the Eagles decide to pursue a change (and if Hurts agrees to waive his no-trade clause). Having received $24.3 million thus far, the cap hit for a pre-June 1 trade would amount to only $18.632 million for the 2024 season, with his contract then being clear from the team’s books in 2025.

Would Hurts be traded by the Eagles?

While there’s currently no concrete evidence to suggest the Eagles are considering trading Hurts or that he desires to leave Philadelphia, the possibility is being discussed. This speculation raises the question of who would step in as the Eagles’ starting quarterback if such a trade were to occur, especially considering the team’s recent Super Bowl appearance.

If the Eagles were to explore potential trades, they might engage with teams like the Chicago Bears or New England Patriots, targeting their first or third pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. The Eagles could aim for Bears quarterback Justin Fields if Chicago is willing to part with their top pick for a quarterback.

It’s worth noting that the Eagles hold the 22nd overall pick in April’s draft, and by then, the top quarterback prospects might be off the board. Considering the pressure on head coach Sirianni, it seems unlikely for the Eagles to trade Hurts unless they have a viable and promising replacement in mind.
