Rowdy Bauer, a senior at Norfolk High School, signed a walk-on contract with the Nebraska Cornhuskers on Wednesday.

With 110 carries, Bauer concluded the 2023 season with 719 yards and nine touchdowns.

The Panthers utility player averaged over 100 yards each game and accumulated about 1,100 all-purpose yards.

In 2023, Bauer racked up 27 total tackles and one interception on the defensive end of the field.

“It’s just been like a dream come true the last couple of weeks,” Bauer said. “It’s been a big relief to achieve something I’ve always wanted to be able to do.”

Several universities expressed interest in Bauer, including Louisiana-Monroe, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

When Bauer was a walk-on with the Cornhuskers, he said that head coach Matt Rhule of Nebraska football had informed him about his walk-on days at Penn State.

“That was one of the first things he told me when I met him,” Bauer said. “[Rhule said] ‘I was a walk-on so it means more to me.’ It also means a lot to me just doing things the hard way. I feel like that’s what I’ve done to be able to get to this opportunity so that’s what I’m going to have to do at Nebraska and I’m definitely willing to do that. I’m excited.”

He claimed that the Nebraska coaching staff had informed him that he would be playing both sides of the ball and that they saw it as an opportunity to help the team succeed.

Along with Norfolk Catholic Nolan Fennessey at Nebraska and Battle Creek Trent Uhlir, Bauer is the third walk-on in the Norfolk area.
