Portsmouth, the top team in the league, defeated Ipswich Town Women 4-2 this afternoon at Westleigh Park.

Town’s hopes of being promoted this season were dashed by a setback despite goals from Bonnie Horwood and Ruby Doe.

In the seventeenth minute, against the run of play, Emma Jones headed a low cross into Georgie Freeland, who converted to give the hosts the lead.

In the 34th minute, Jones pulled the ball down and struck a 25-yard shot into the far corner to increase Portsmouth’s lead.

Nicole Barrett’s deep free kick in the 41st minute gave the home team a 3-0 lead when it sailed past everyone and into the goal.

Just before the half, Town did manage to equalize when Ruby Doe was fouled in the box and Bonnie Horwood scored from the penalty spot.

But, Sophie Quirk at the back post brought the ball back across for Freeland, who finished into the net for her second goal of the match, giving Pompey a three-goal advantage again.

In the 85th minute, Summer Hughes brought the ball to the byline and cut back for Doe, who finished the play to give the Tractor Girls another goal back.

Town is now 19 points behind Portsmouth following this loss, however they are still in fourth place in the league as a result of this outcome.

On Saturday 23rd, March, Town will play their much-anticipated match at Portman Road against Chatham Town, who are currently in second place. Kickoff is at 3pm.

Town: Horwood, Peskett (Bryant), Doe, Gunning-Williams (Bowyer), Thomas, Williams, Hughes, Robertson (O’Brien), Mitchell (Barker), Boswell (c), and Hartley.
