Tommy Gemmell’s unforgettable goal against Inter Milan in the historic European Cup Final of May 25, 1967, remains etched in the memory of every Celtic fan who witnessed it. Despite his heroic efforts, the left-back’s contribution to securing the club’s fourth successive title often goes unrecognized.

Gemmell displayed his prowess again in the European showdown against Feyenoord three years later, although the Dutch ultimately emerged victorious in extra time. However, it’s Gemmell’s goal that clinched the fourth successive title for Jock Stein’s legendary side on their path to securing the club’s first nine in a row from 1966 to 1974 that remains somewhat overlooked.

His crucial goal came on April 21, 1969, against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, as Celtic found themselves struggling. Gemmell thundered in the title-clinching goal, securing a 2-2 draw and their fourth consecutive crown. Reflecting on the match, Gemmell revealed his determination to secure the championship and recounted the moment he struck the ball past the helpless Kilmarnock goalkeeper, Sandy McLaughlin.

The season was marked by further triumphs, with Celtic securing the League Cup Final against Hibs earlier in April and then going on to claim victory against Rangers in the Scottish Cup Final. Gemmell’s significant contributions to Celtic’s success continue to be celebrated, ensuring his enduring legacy in the club’s illustrious history.
